Went to Haydock races yesterday, was a really good day but on the last race a horse was pulled up on the last lap, the jockey jumped off and the horse fell to the floor  was awful, they pulled the screens round and then the horsebox came and took it away!
Was wondering if anyone knew what had happened, tI think the horse was called Alright Now M'Lad, trained by Jonjo o @Neill, ridden by Alan Berry.

Sad to say this is one of the downs of racing... he had a heart attack according to my friend.

Personally i am really against racing - heard of too many fatalities, heart attacks/broken limbs, seen too many poor animals with huge winnings tossed on the scrapheap (meat man) when they can no longer race. Over the years we've had several ex racers with psychological issues come to our yard, even on a lesser scale, windsuckers & weavers, i think very few horses enjoy the racing life.
:( sorry for the rant x

not turning this in to an argument Christine however I understand where you are coming from to a certain extent but the same could be said for eventers and showjumpers I have worked in all sorts of yards and I have seen broken bones, horses tossed on scrap heap or injuries so called healed and sold on and most of which have come from eventing yards where there careers also start young. Any professional equestrian sport has its flaws except that with eventing and SJ they cover them up better. Its of a mixed opinion but I know many a horse that has enjoyed its racing (to the point they have not retired them as they have enjoyed there trips to the racing so much) Its just that racing is always going to be in the spotlight due to the higher risk of injuries etc. not arguing with you or starting a debate just wanted to put my point across also.

Agree with you Gemma. I worked with race horses and ours were treated really well, if they didn't want to race they didnt, and our jockeys were always very good. We lost a horse to heart attack on the track and it was, of course, heart wrenching, but also a very quick death that he would've known nothing about...unlike a great deal of horses who are kept alive for too long because owners are too upset for themselves to put their horses to sleep...among many other things :(

There are just has many deaths in other equine sports, just racing is more in the public eye... polo is the worst for leg fractures....
I have had ex racers all my life... been in racing yards since I was 13... lots of my friends have ex racers and I think I have only come accross a handful that weave or crib... think its down to the handling, enviroment etc... The ex racers club, RoR, Heroes and Darley all do a fab job and yesterday at Chelt there was a parade of ex racers before racing...

Have to disagree with you there Christine, I own an ex-racer and at 17 he still lives to be in front. Try holding him behind other horses and you have a near impossible task, you can see it in his expression he just loves to run and outrun the others. Also, I once hacked him past our local football club when there was a match on and as soon as he heard the loud speakers he started prancing, neck arched, toes pointed he was so damned excited as he thought he was at the race track again.

As said, it's a personal opinion, based on what i've experienced in my 32 yrs around horses, it's a view point i get slated for - my Dad, who was a blacksmith when i was a girl, later became a bookie!!
