I've seen them mentioned a lot on here recently, and im interested [if this latest bedding doesnt work out for Scottie!]

What are they like to use?
Can you just put them on the floor and thats it, no watering etc?
How much do you get them for?
How many 'bags' do you use to make a good depth bed?
Can they be used with other bedding?
Anything else you can think of?

Thanks in advance! :D

We are having a huge discussion about wood pellets on another forum as I was thinking of buying them from a Liverpool supplier when I put them on rubber matting.

What has put me off them is the dust that people have mentioned and I know you mentioned dust before with the bedding you are on now. So Im not sure. I do know there is wood pellets and there is wood pellets. I do believe that if you buy from a proper horse supplier rather than an a place where they sell to burn in a fire they are supposed to be less dusty. One girl used to work in a place that supplied them and when they came in the big lorries and were emptied she said the dust was unbelieveable.

A friend of mine buys them in bulk in bags like you get sand delivered from a builder merchants. She then keeps a bag at the side of the stable and when she digs out a bit of wet she puts a shovel full in, she never brings up the whole bed. You have to soak them first though when you start the bed off.

If you google Liverpool wood pellets they have prices on there.

If they are like the absor bed stuff which you water they are very expensive. The stuff I have seen was the size of a bag of sandpit sand and cost £25 or there abouts. It looked a good idea as they were dust free it was just the cost that bothered me but if you mixed them with say shredded paper would cut the cost.

No the best way to describe wood pellets is that they look like pony nuts!! When you lay them down you put water on them and they break down into saw dust.

Sounds like a lot of hassle for just a bed!

I really like pellet beddings they are much easier to store and make a nice stable bed that doesnt move around th smae, its usually quite dense and comfortable looking they are dead easy to muck out too

some you can just put down but the bags are small and then its swells so you would have to use more, some others grind down, such as nedz bedz advanced which is straw pelletes, i really liked them but as most look like nuts kizzie ate most of them so i have to use soaked ones if i use it as it probably would make her very poorly as most of them swell a fair bit

ive seen them from 3.10-5.00 a bag, really varries quite a lot woody pet is very pricey as i think it comes from canada

with the stuff you soak i can make a bed out of about four bags but my stable is 14x14 so pretty huge, the grindy down stuff used about five and stuck dennis in for an hour or so and he would grind it down much quicker than little light kizzie

you can use it with other bedding ive used it with savings and it really helped and made the beds really nice and fluffy and soft looking i love it to muck out really easy i think but takes some getting used to, usually not too dusty although some you have to keep putting a bit of water on so make sure you keep an eye on it, although most are relatively us dust for something that looks like dust! the nedz advanced is the best i think if they wont eat it it just doesnt look that nice cause its a bit of an odd colour

I use wood pellets and love them. They come in small see-through bags, they look like pony cubes, and expand when added to water. I don't find it a hassle at all as I have a huge wheelbarrow, empty about 2-3 bags and add water, leave until 'fluffed up' and take my small, regular barrow to fill from the large barrow as and when I need them. So I don't need to faff around with water often as I make a batch up in my big barrow.

I use a thin layer of wood pellets (already soaked) on rubber matting. The texture reminds me of thick sawdust. I don't find them dusty at all. Gem has a minor dust allergy and she's fine with them. The more you buy, the cheaper per pag they are.

I have a load of pellets stored in my tack room. They should last me a while! I refuse to pay £9 for a bale of unbranded wood shavings at my local tack shop, which is why I decided to try wood pellets.

Where is the cheapest place to buy them? I have found one website Bio - Corley and they are sold in 10kg bags and work out at 2.34 when bought in bulk but don't think this includes VAT!
