Obviously for people who dont mind answering this. How much do you pay? What does this cover you for? Value, etc and what company is it?
I have been looking for quotes and my quote for my riding horse seems to be quite expensive.
Thanks in advance! :)

I pay for Ollies insurance despite not being my horse, He is insured for vets fees, (but not covered for colic) loss of use and tehft etc
He is insured for £5000 and is unsured for dressage below medium, they would expect his value to be put up and his premium to be more if he was doing medium, silly i know
Im not sure what the company is but we deblt with them a while ago for vets fees and physio bills for his back they were easy to deal with and we got the money through very quickly, his insurance is £42.50 a month which might be a bit pricey im nto sure

Thanks for the reply!
Wow, well mine was more than that and I dont do anything like what you do. Just hacking, schooling and (hopefully soon) riding club activities like working hunter, etc. And local shows.
Think mine came out at £52!

Harmonys insured with Petplan for £1500, level 3 which includes driving (only needed the level 3 for driving, otherwise would have been level 2 which is hacking/local shows etc) and vets fees.
Around £30 a month

Maybe its because I put that she was worth more. I'm sure I read on an insurance website that they would not pay out more than your horse is worth so say you put that your horse with £2000 and it needed colic surgery and was at the hospital for a while with all the costs incurred there are the bill was £3500 would they only pay out £2000 becuase thats what your horse is worth then you have to pay for the rest on top of that?!?!

That doesnt sound right.
The sum insured is generally for loss by death/stolen and they'll pay out how much you insured your horse for.
and for vets fees you usually choose a price range, so for petplan its either upto £3500 or £5000 which stands regardless of the horses value

IM no good with insurance but i think usually the vets fees are paid from a certain amount, mine is i pay the first £175 and then they pay anything on top of that up to £5000
The amount you insure your horse for is just incase of theft loss of use death etc
If your fidning it hard to work out how much to value her at then just have a look at how much similar horses are forsale at and how much you would need to get a horse like her if something did happen to her
I dont think mine sounds so expensive now Poppy yours seems quite pricey considering you have insured her for £1500

Mine is insured for £3500. Includes everything (vet bills etc) BUT NOT loss of use as this bumped the price up loads, and not my tack.
Mines £31 per month, so...... About £370 a year. Thats NFU x

Im actually thinking mine is quite cheap then seeing as Ollie is insured for quite a bit of money, i think as a rule its usually 10% of the value of the horse

Hi, I've got all mine with NFU. Can not praise the company enough for how super then have been. I pay £23 per month for Gunner, my 4 year old who's insured for £5,000 vet fees and £1,950 value/ loss of animal. My others are insured for a value/ loss of animal of £5,000 and vets up to £5,000 for £33/ month/ horse.
I was shocked when we had John put to sleep. I phoned up to cancel his insurance, they questioned me and I said "he was put to sleep due to not recovering from his injury I'd claimed for" I'd already claimed the full £5,000 vets fees and there was nothing left we could do for him even if I had a £squillion to spend on him. I assumed as they'd paid out on the claim and we'd decided without consulting them to have him PTS that was it I did not think I was entitled to any money. I'd only payed £150 worth of Johns premiums and claimed back around £9000 already. I didn't have loss of use. Anyway the girl said to get my vet to write a letter in accordance to BEVA and send it in along with the receipt from the disposal man. 10 days later cheque in the post for the full loss of animal amount and disposal cost. They did not ask for his passport, proof of purchase, anything, they were brilliant.
NFU are FAB!!

Ahh but E&L are notoriously bad at paying out - lots of vets won't deal with them and want the money from you upfront if its going on E&L insurance..
I'm with Petplan (which my vet approves of) - I pay £21 a month, Bella is insured for £600 value, covered for vets fees up to £5000, 3rd party, rider insurance and the usual death theft cover.
I am just going through the process of claiming, so will let you know if they're any good! x

I had the same problem, everything was pretty much £50+ which I was just not happy with paying.
In the end I went with Stoneways, thats £40 a month for everything but LOU and personal accident cover. He's valued at 3k
