View Full Version : How much weight can she carry?

I've seen men ride Quarter Horses, I've seen larger ladies ride Quarter Horses...

How much weight do you think Tehya could carry - now at 4yrs old and when she's fully matured? I can't imagine a man or anyone heavier than me riding her! I know it'd depend various factors such as the riders balance, horse's conformation, bone, age and fitness etc. but a guesstimate would be appreciated. :)

I'd say Tehya's 14.2/3hh.

Do these fairly recent photos help?

I'd say probably 14 stone!

My Dad, whos 6ft and about 13 stone, rides lola for short rides who is a similar height and build to tehya. He is on the larger side for her and definately a bit big considering hes a begninner but for just walking Lola manages just fine.

I would say about 12 stone for a more unbalanced beginner to do everything on her walk/trot/canter/jump for any length of time, or about 13-14 stone for a well balanced intermediate rider to do all of the above :)

is she by Sedghill gold by any chance?

I always think sometimes its a bit much to ask them to carry a large man but she is relativley well built and has good bone she hasnt got the big stock horse type muscle but looks like she would carry a decent amount of weight maybe around 12/13 stone

but out on the western curcuit some of the blokes are HUGE men really tall blokes and they ride and back tiny little three year olds, although i think that is asking far far too much for them personally

Sisco at 3 was carrying a 14 Stone man about, he looked large, it gave him a dipped back.

It all depends because some skinny people are actually heavier then they look and vise versa.

12/13?

Is this because you're OH wanted to ride her or something? I remember you posting about it a while ago.

No, she's not by Sedghill Gold... she is by a buckskin stallion in Wales. :)
Oh beks, are you saying my Tehya's nose looks like a dogs rear end? That's harsh! :ashamed::lol: (my advicator of course)

My OH would like to ride but with Gem and Tehya it doesn't look like he'll be riding any time soon - he's 13 stone. I suppose that was my main reason for asking what you think she could carry but also, I was curious as I see larger people riding QHs so was wondering if I was being 'too soft'.

Is he a novice? Why don't you try it and see how she reacts? Just walking to start with. I'm sure she'd let you know if she was struggling.

pmsl Beks, been on the Pimms again??

See Dad is having lessons so that he is a 'rider' when he comes to riding Lola. I dont think she will have a problem just in walk- it certainly wont hurt her in walk, just watch her ears and facial expression, shell show you if shes not happy

He is indeed a novice. I didn't want to do anything but short rides in walk with him and her but the area I ride is not flat, with stoney ground in places and hills. I'd probably worry less if Tehya was a few years older but she's only 4 and I don't want to be putting too much weight on her young-self.
... maybe OH should just go on a diet. :D

 If you're hesitant about it, then don't bother. What Lube's dad is doing is a good idea, having lessons beforehand. This isn't the first time you've mentioned this so I'm guessing he has a keen interest in riding? Why not suggest having some lessons? You'll probably find he loses weight riding anyway!

Lola is 5, dad gets on prob once every month I think, but will eventually be more than that when she has muscled up more from being ridden by myself and others so she will carry him more comfortably. I can see your worries, its worried me too with Lola, and I will only let Dad ride on grass in the fields at the moment, and never any longer than 10 mins.

OH is quite tall so I wouldn't say he's overweight but still... if he lost a bit of weight... :cheekywink:
He is interested but it would be handy if he could ride one of mine, because I have the two of them here he'd be company to ride out with.
3rd horse required?

I could see it was a nose!

I reckon a chunky welsh cob, around the 15.2 mark but chunky :)

Give her a year or two and she should be fine, but maybe not quite yet. She looks really strong though, I'd say she would probably get away with it now, but I'd wait just to be on the safe side.

Oh yes, nice - a chunky welsh cob... anyone want to give me a chunky welsh cob? Or lend me one for a bit? :) I'm glad someone could see it was Tehya's nose.

Eeek, thanks, so you might see OH on Tehya in a yr or two. :D
