Well my poor little man has really been in the wars this week :( On Monday I gave him his tea like normal turned round to shut the school gate, turned back round and he was choking!! Rubbed his throat and couldn't find the blockage so called the vet! Thankfully as I was on the phone he managed to cough it up and it was a big chunk of chaff he had swallowed! Kept him in for a few hours and then turned him back out in the school with the others as he seemed OK and vet had OKed it. Ate his breakfast the following morning fine but much more careful this time bless him!
Then just now, went down with my sister to feed up for the night and arrived to find him standing in the field but he was wanting his dinner like the others so gave him his tea. Nibbled a few mouthfuls whilst Bob put his rug on then completely disregarded his feed and went away to lie down! He was lying down and groaning horribly so again straight onto the phone to the vet and he wanted to come out an see him straight away! Whilst we were waiting for the vet he thankfully had a poo which turned put to be full of snake sized worms! Showed vet and he listened to his stomach and described it as a cement mixer full of bricks! Vets reckons its a mixture of both gassy colic and the worms but he wasnt Freddie :( so he's currently in the stable as he's got to stay in over night and vets going to ring me to check on him! He was fantastic for the vet and had his first injection with no worry so very proud of him!

Going to do a proper update of him later as despite this everything has been amazing with him :D

I took Noodle to the horsepital so that he could be done today.
I was very specific with the vet and said if it was in the abdomen I didn't want them to go ahead and to PTS, as doing so would double the cost and have increased risks for Noodle.
I spoke to the et this morning and reiterated this. Later on I got a phone call to say that Noolde was up and doing well :D :D they then said it was difficult surgery and they had to go into the abdomen  as he had old scar tissue from a kick that had stopped the balls from dropping so they had grown and got stuck, because of this they used traction to pull them out and tore soemthing so that needed stitching to prevent his bowl coming through  So now I have a pony that's had major surgery (2hrs compared to 45 mins) and the possibility of a bill that's double the size. They said they would try to keep the cost as low as possible. But I'm annoyed that they've gone against my specific request and I can't refuse payment as they take your card details before hand

However at least I've still got Noodle :) he better turn into a good pony

Silly bit question coming up!

Milly's old mummy sent me the bits that she used to wear, as she told me she went a lot better in a happy mouth as she couldn't stand the taste of standard bits - how right that is! It's been a bit challenging to get one in her mouth unless its covered in apple juice :cheekywink:

They arrived today and I was quite surprised to see that they were straight bar bits - for some reason I was expecting them to be french link, not sure why...!

All ours have french link bits, I've never had a straight bar before as I thought they looked quite uncomfy and as if they would squash the tongue down? Wouldn't it also make it easier for the horse to lean?

Heres the question: What are the pros/cons of a straight bar bit? Wouldn't a french link / roller type be more comfy, or do some horses prefer the feel of a straight bar as it doesn't move around as much?

Feeling a bit stupid but thought I'd ask! :ashamed: x

For the past 30 years I have gone from having four good doers who were always on restricted grazing, to three veterans who had to be bulked up all of the the time and Star and Kosha who were still restricted....Now I am back at the beginning!

I am still panicking now and then over Ambers weight as I look at her and think she is like Mony and Sov but they hardly had any teeth :ashamed: and Ambers teeth are in very good order for her age. She puts weight on alot easier than the other girls did and she is even able to live in with the others, something I have never had in a long time, what with the two eldest having to go in lush paddocks and have lots of feeds etc, then Star having lami and Kosha just being massively over weight meant they were all in need of different types of care. Now they are all the same and it feels so odd lol.

I miss Mony and Sov alot but not the care side because I was always stressing over weight and if they had enough rugs on etc etc, I never realised how different it was with 'normal' younger, who all have their own teeth (ok not much younger but they were once lol). Horse owning is so much more fun when you're not weight watching all of the time.

I am going to hang on to this feeling as long as I can because it won't be long till the older two start dropping teeth lol

Hi All!

I haven’t been around to post much lately – my computer at home is no more and I don’t get time to get on at work, so I mainly browse and do quick replies on my phone!!! But I am still around :D

Just thought I would check in to say all is well with me and Bertie. Bertie’s spring weight management regime is in full swing and he is looking great on it – he has 4 hours of grass in a morning, spends the rest of the day on a wood chip paddock with hay and the company of another fat friend, and comes in to his stable at night. We are hacking 3 – 4 times a week with 1 day of schooling, and with the wet weather the paths are nice and soft at the moment so we get plenty of trotting in. Bertie’s bum has never been so solid!!!

I am struggling a little with schooling at the moment but nothing major – I really can’t afford any lessons, and with loss of horse transport since my friend sold up, I don’t plan on doing much showing, so can’t justify paying for them. It’s nothing Bertie is doing wrong; I just seem to have gotten almost back to the stage I got to with my instructor last year and don’t know how to progress much further!!! But it’s all good, we’re enjoying life anyway :o

I haven’t clipped his feathers for 8 months and they are completely ridiculous – he’s having a “number 1 all over” hair cut on Sunday so I’ll make sure to get before and after pics!!! With the wet weather I decided to leave them as long as possible to protect his legs from the mud, but I think *touch wood* it might be safe to clip them now! I’m going to have something daft clipped onto his bum too seeing as I have no showing plans  His mane is also quite magnificent, everyone at the yard has started calling him Simon Cowell due to his “tall black hair” :pmsl:

There is a show local to me a week on Sunday (the only one I can ride to in my area) but I can’t muster up much enthusiasm for showing to be honest. I’m going to clip him at the weekend so at least he’s ready if I do decide to go. There is a clear round in the morning so I might just nip round and whizz round that, he’ll enjoy that more than any showing class!!! Ground conditions depending obviously. Plus my best friend is taking her newly acquired loan horse (ex eventer Tyson) for the veteran class and I really want to go and cheer her on from the side lines!!!!

So that’s us!!! We are moving forward happily. I just love to be in his company and am enjoying long, energetic hacks with my friends. Most people at my yard have lessons this Saturday morning so I think I will sneak off early before anyone notices and have a hack on my own with my boy.

Thanks for reading, a couple of comedy Bertie pics below!!!!!

I hope you get the full moustache effect from this picture, it is amazing at the moment!!!!

Trying to get Shamrock to fall in love with him….. aged 27, she is wise enough to stay away from moustache wearers!!!!

And having a good laugh at life in general  :innocent:

I stupidly posted this on another forum last night, full of people who know everything, and have kindly received not a single reply. Helpful!

Saffy is is very tense through her shoulders and, as a result, tends to tip onto the forehand. I'm doing a lot of basic lateral work to try and increase the mobility through her shoulder, things like leg yielding, spiraling in and out of a circle, turns on the forehand etc, but I'd like to introduce some shoulder-in. I haven't done much of this before, so I just need to check what I should be doing. Where should my hands be? Should my shoulders be turned in? Where do my legs go? I had a play today and she was very willing to flex inwards but felt like she was on sinking sand when I asked her to move her shoulders over. I'm pretty sure I was asking wrong though

Any help would be much appreciated :D Photos would be great too if anyone has any.

Hi All
My Red has just gone 3
I have never had a horse - just going on the farmers advice
Red is a Welsh D - he gets 2 cupfuls of Alpha A and the same again of Drake's Mix (sorry this is probably the farmers feed - just oats really)
Some carrots, apples and plenty of grass and he comes in every night to a full stable of hay

I am doing this right?

Thanks

What do you personally think would be a good budget to aim for, for what would be a first horse for myself. A nice all rounder type, or possibley a 4/5/6yo to bring on myself. I've obviously been riding for 10 years now, by the time I finish it'll have been 13 years so it'd be about time

I've always saved money since I was a kid, but when I was 16 I decided I wanted to use that to buy a horse. 5 years later I've got 2.7k saved up for a horse when I finish uni, obviously got a couple more years to earn and save more, but what do you think would be a good budget to play with? My plan is to save up the initial starting costs now, so that when I finish uni I just have to worry about being able to afford the daily upkeep.

Would be good to get opinions :P

Was in a rush at yard today and as always thing happen when you are in a rush! Tigger was laying down at the bottom of the field and was sooooo adorable, it's only very recently he's let me be with him whilst laid down and today I could do anything I wanted! :-) I took his muzzle off and he couldn't be bothered to get up and eat just did so laying there lol! I had a good old stroke and cuddle but had to get him up in the end.

Then had to see the foal that was born night before last, and all the others in with it were so cute so got totally distracted for far too long!

Here is the new filly
