Default Do you buy your jumping poles?

I have heard that if you go to a carpet place they give the PLASTIC middle away to you and they make great light jumping poles.

People down the road have makeshift jumps (I have LOADS of tyers, barrals (which can be cut down) and sticks/logs). But I need trotting poles to get started.

Could I use thin plastic bright blue tubing? so does it need to be thicker and wodden so he feels it slightly if he kicks it?

I'd buy him poles but they are so £££, well £30 each is alot when I have been told it is good to have atleast 4 (I know this sounds cheap) and postage and packaging etc. BUT 1 Ihave no idea how do go about buying poles (they are for trotting over) - is it cheaper to go for one colour, or buy ones that arn't painted, do I buy them off ebay and pick them up etc? then I will make stands (really easy to make) and buy the cups off ebay.

I know I sound like a cheap skate but we arn't exactly going to be SJ and he may not like jumping at all. So I wouldn't want to waste too much money - my mum's friend is going to teach him over summer (she is a really good rider)

Just I am unsure the whole, where do I get poles from?

I've neve bought any jumps Have always made them out of bits and bobs.
Tyres, drain pipes, fence posts, buckets, pallettes. My dad's friend did make my some jump wings which are fab and my recent poles are the thick branches cut from some trees that were in our fields

most timber yards will sell jump poles and you can just go pick them up in a horse trailer or something, i think they are like £20 for 12ft unpainted poles, 12ft is massive though buy 10ft

paint them yourself with whatever paint is kicking about at home and wooden ones are best really, the plastic ones are too light and easy to knock down and the horse often will become more careless over a light fence

I begrudge paying for jumps as they are so expensive. Agree with the others that bits and bobs can be just as effective. We use drain pipes as trotting poles/ jumps.
