Thumbs down Bad Magic chewing Basils tail!!

Magic has started chewing Basils tail and is making a mess of it

WE doused his tail in neat dettol yesterday but hasnt worked, Im off to buy a grazing muzzle but as they are out 24/7 a grazing muzzle isnt a long term option.....so any helpful hints would be great before magic gets turned in to dog food

Uh-oh naughty Madge. Would bandaging his tail for a bit be an option? Once she thinks she can't get to it she might find something else to destroy Then he can have it unbandaged. Maybe try eucalyptus oil? It's the only thing that's stopped Saf eating her bedding.

Thumbs down

Thanks for the idea Gem but probably not very practical

Eucalyptus oil maybe some thing to keep in mind. Magic is wearing her muzzle and cant work out how to eat with it on I cant see it being on when I go back this evening

Ive got to go and find something called bitter apple (?),used to stop dogs chewing furniture

If anyone can suggest (within reason, mustnt break the bank or turn basils tail a funny colour) anything that tastes disgusting that can be sprayed/rubbed in to basils tail feel free!!

I wonder why she has start doing it? I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions for Basils tail but I wonder if something to distract her would do the trick? Perhaps a ball in the field or something for her to play with or maybe a field lick?

Someone on HHO suggested a mineral imbalance, personaly I think it more likely to be teething as she gets 2 feeds a day and is out 24/7.

A field lick is probably out as Basil cant have alot of certain ingredients in them, a ball would be killed instantly by basil and would cost me a fortune....Im going to buy some bitter apple spray to go in basils tail, its used to stop dogs chewing furniture, wounds etc so should be ok for basils tail and its under £5, which is good as I spent £15 on a flipping muzzle this morning!

Will let you all know if it works!

Youngster do this, I was told its something they would do with their mother and could be down to the horse lacking something.

Jester chewed Merlin's tail off to the dock when they were babies!

some people say its down to a lack of vitmains but personally think that rubbish, ive known some horses with perfect diets do it and some who didnt get fed anything that didnt

all you can do it try put something nasty tasting in his tail and hope she stops it, maybe plaiting and buncing it up polo pony style might help or one of those tail bag things
