Default Microchipping foals!

Hi folks, you probably all know by now that I have bought a foal. I've banged on about it enough! He was born on the 8th July, therefore is only 2 weeks old. I'm getting mam and baby to graze shortly but she is still with the stallion for now. Mam will go back to her owner at weaning!

Anyway, when would you chip baby for his passport? I wanted to do it quite soon so he wasn't too big to handle but equally don't want his first experience of human beings to be a bad one! I know inserting the chip can hurt! Bless him - I'm not looking forward to it really!

Should I wait until he's been with me a bit, so I can get a foal slip on him and start to show him the world is a good place or do it while he is small.

king only got chipped last week and he is a very big boy but very well handled he didnt even flinch , you can either do it now whilst he is smaller and easier to manage or maul him loads and hope he is good for the chip,

what we have done with king is done his chip passport and first jab all at the same time and money on call outs etc, some vets wont do them dead young though as the needle is quite a big one so maybe ring your vet to see what they say

even if they do get it done without a huge amount of handling they do get over it quite easily, our foals at work havent taken it personally or anything

I think we did the haffie foal at about 12 weeks, we gave him a tiny bit of local first though where the chip was going, as its a blooming big needle for the chip, about as think as a pencil lead!

Im not sure about the best the best time to do it for a horse but when Copper was chipped the vet said that its the same needle that they put into puppies and kittens and i know kittens and puppies are chipped at about 12 weeks with the second jab depending on how they cope with the second jab

i havent done my two yet, skye is ready for hers as she is really good with people, but i want storm done at the same time, so i want to wait till he is halter broken and know that i can hold on to him before i get the vet out as i want them to have their jabs at the same time. id rather not put back all my hard work a step untill hes a lot more confident with me handling him
