Default Can't take Kinzzy away from mare and foal!

Well..... I seem to have a problem! As you all know, I have Kinzzy and have recently bought a beautiful colt foal called Teddy! He's only 6 weeks old, so I have mam with him too! Three horses all together.

I rode Kinzzy for 20 mins yesterday and when I returned the mare had ran poor teddy round the field for the whole time I was away and he was dripping in sweat! Poor little mite - I felt really bad for him...and mam really!

I know she has formed a close bond with Kinzzy already but thought she's be ok as she had baby with her! Wrong!!!!

So what can I do? Not ride kinzzy until baby has been weaned and mam has gone back? Carry on and hope she gets used to it (I don't fancy that option)! What I worry about it what she's teaching my foal! Any ideas or suggestions please!

have you stables you could put the mare and foal in that way they arent running about and ripping the fields up at least,

its odd you would think that cause they have their foals they would be fine but they seem to still need another companion some of ours can be a little bit like that,

she will adjust soon enough i would just shut her in a stable if you can possibly just the stress of moving home, was she kept in quite a big herd? she will soon adjust they all do, give her something tasty in the stable to concerntrate on as well

Thanks for that! I do have stables but worry that she'll injure the foal if she gets very stressed in there or break throught the door. I do put them in regularly so they get used to it and always give a tasty feed and hay. Even when I bring them in, the mare stresses for the few seconds till she can see kinzzy again!

To my knowledge, she has always been kept with another 2 mares and the stallion - one mare is coloured like kinzzy.

I thought having baby would be sufficient as company for her but obviously not!

Ordinarily I would say carry on riding and eventually the mare will get used to it. But with her having a foal at foot, who is having to run around with her (and learn from her as you say) then I would say try bringing her in. But you will probably find she still stresses in the stable. I have had terrible problems in the past with horses and seperation (first appollo, then Louis, then Kita) And I have yet to come up with a good solution. It can be a real nightmare. I hope you manage to work something out.

so-n-so can tell one end of a horse from the other

oooh this sounds familier!

my lot first went out all together when i moved yards, HUGE mistake!!! millie jumped out of the stable and jumped out of the yard to get to the field where my welshie was going mad cos millie had gone, i tried taking millie for a ride she tried to rear and spin round and get to my other horses as i tried to get on. so they are all in one field but all sperate, they can reach the horses next to them and groom etc but cant follow each other round like sheep. they have to learn some independance.

so you could try to seperate mare and foal and kinzzy. then take kinzy away for a bit then gradually increase the time shes away. i say this as the foal will soon start to think that another horse going away is REALLY BAD! and he will be the same thru his life. the quicker he learns horses caom and go and come back the better, better for you and him. xx
