Default Weight limit to riding? Fuller fillies wanted!

What do you personally think this could be?

I know its horses for courses, but I am asking as my Mum and me were pipe dreaming about getting another horse but for my mum and my tall little sister. My Mum admitted she wouldn't feel comfortable making an animal carry her weight, and she then said "I would hate to subject them to anything over 16 stone, and I'm a bit far from being that" stating she was heavier than 16 stone.

So what do you think? Is my mum right? I would give anything to be able to go for a plod just me and my mum. Does anyone have any pictures of them on their suitable horses? I don't intend to make a spectacle of anyone, I have no hang ups to anyone riding horses if the horse is suited to their weight, and I would really appreciate your replies!

My mum is a 5ft 8" novice, itching to get into riding again, if anyone has spotted something suitable for sale recently for me to drool over....

Thanks you guys!

I am just under 14 stone and I am scared to ride Becky but have been told that I can ride her, as she is built to carry an over 13 stone man ALL DAY!! Still wary though!
Think Abbi would be better for me! She is a friesian X cob, standing at 14.3hh so think she could manage me more! Different horses/ponies are built for different things!

Ditto FL. I ride Mony and I'm 11 stone and she's 14hh. Star is only 13.1hh but shes alot narrower and finer than Mony and I am no loner able to ride her...need to start cycling again I think to loose the extra weight. I do however get on Kosha but shetties carried men and peat etc around the shetland isles and are built for weight carrying (in fact he is too lively for me lol). I am happiest on a chunky 14.2hh though

I'm about 14st 5'9 and ride a stocky little 12.3 for 20 minutes when he's being naughty, but for no longer. I wouldn't ride nothing under 15.2 for a long time. Many many people have told me it's not your weight it's how you carry yourself to how it feels to the horse

Just realized I didn't answer your question at all. Sorry I will finish it off later when I'm off my phone

Well...sisco was carrying around a 14 stone man at 3yrs old, it didn't do him any good at all, hes back rather dipped because of this, you could see he wasn't mature enough for it at the time.

So I would get a horse thats stopped growing, is mature enough to carry such weight, I know its mainly down to the rider etc and that some people don't look their weight but I do feel we must look at it from all views.

I don't think that there really is a set limit if you get what I mean? I suppose a 30 stone person probably couldn't physically 'get on a horse let alone ride one and I don't think there would be a horse that could carry someone that heavy.

However, it's all horses for courses. I am 12 1/2 stone, probably pushing 13 stone with all my gear on. My Boys are Welsh D's, built for stockier people I have ridden a 12.2 Highland x who carried me fine, no trouble (he was built like a tank!) I wouldn't feel comfortable on a finer, smaller pony.

Its really interesting.
My mum has kept telling me how much she is itching to ride, and keeps pointing at horses on our yard and asks "would they carry me?" and I just don't know what reply to give as I'm really not sure. She pointed at a cobby 15hher and said "would that do" and I felt the need to lean towards no.

I guess what I'm looking for is someone around 16 stone riding a horse suited to them so I know what to keep an eye out for. x
