thought i would post my question in this section as it is basically adopting. when i was in equine college there was a girl that adopted a horse from a sanctuary (all i remember was it was green something) she was able to ride and jump etc. i was thinking of looking for a horse that is safe to hack etc that i can keep at a livery.
i have been looking online to look at adoption agreements and types of horses however some say you have to own your own land, and others which seem to only be companions.
am i looking in the wrong places or am i looking for something that doesn't exist?
Rescues are often rescues for a reason (ie they have been neglected due to being of no use to someone) Try looking at rehabilitation centers, they are more geared towards horses that can have a future as a working horse.
I think alot of the time rescue centres have them down as companion only so that they aren't overworked. Alot of the horses that come into the centres are only suitable for companions although I know that's not alwyas the case. They have to be over precautious about the animals in their homes, it isn't like a rehoming a dog or cat, horses have huge abilities and there are chances that people will see it as a way to get a cheap horse and then overwork them when they aren't really capable.
Maybe phone a couple nearish to you and see what they have got, if anything comes in that is going to be suitable for you they can take down your details and then keep them on file to let you know in the future.
thanks it would help if i could remember the name of the sanctuary, it was just a random thought i had earlier about adopting instead of buying. the rescue near to me states you must own your own land.
I think they like you to own your own land because that would pose less risk of them ending up with the animals back in their care. If you have them on a livery yard there is a higher risk of you not being able to afford the livery and you having no control over being told to move etc due to yards being closed down.
It's a bit daft being like that really as the majority of horse owners are on livery yards but hey ho.
Somewhat off topic but I do find it a bit bizarre that there's so much publicity around abandoned animals in general but when you try to go through the process, there's so many hoops to jump through. I realise that they don't want their animals to go just anywhere but it does seem as if there's lots of people willing to rehome who can't because of "rules"
its not really off topic madoldbat because thats what i was thinking, all of my other pets are rescues so i was thinking a rescue horse was a good idea. some of the other things is they seem to want you to have owned a horse previously as well which isn't always practical
