Vels mud fever is back

Well after me buying a big tub of pig oil and sulphur I didnt expect Vels mud fever to be making an appearance already
His park is a bit muddy around the hay bale but not very deep so im a bit miffed to say the least.

Just been over to the stables to tuck them all in and do a final muck out and was just feeling around Vels legs to check for lumps and bumps and found a big old scabby bit on his hind leg, it was obviously pretty uncomfortable for him as he shifted himself when I began picking and feeling around it, so I tied him up and squirted pig oil on it to soften, began picking off scabs then washed with warm water and hibbiscrub, wee guy instead of trying to move away from me he just started to violently eat his hay, I truely think he was taking it out on his haynet rather than me!
He is such a good boy for 2 yrs old, anyway once washed I dried his leg (with his thomas the tank towel ) then applied some dermasolve.
Ill have to hunt out his turnout chaps for tomorrow.

Buy some Nizeral from the chemist - don't let on that you are using it on your horse though. Dilute with warm water and lather up well with a face cloth. Wash all around the surrounding area. Should break down many of the scabs. Don't pick them off though as that lets in the dermatophalous bug. No need to rinse off either.

Make sure that she is getting sufficient copper and zinc in her diet as any difeiciency of either will affect the skin quality.

Becky has continual mud fever as much as we try keep on top of it.
Her back legs are normally the worst and we were treating her for mud fever in June
But she has started with it on her front legs now. We have put her back on mud guard in her feed as this does work but after so long she refuses to eat it so its like a never ending battle.

daytona - Yes the chaps keep his legs mud free, ill PM you a link of the ones I use, they are from robinsons, quite pricey but keeps legs clear of mud. They cant be worn 24/7 though, my boys come in at night and he has his chaps on from around 8am to 4pm.

Awww no, it sucks doesn't it. I got some muddy marvel de-scab and it was amazing, you apply it, leave it and then the scabs literally wipe away so much less stressfull than soaking etc.
