Do you buy in bulk?

Was wondering who else buys in bulk?

I usually buy 5-6 bales of hay at a time, which usually puts the number to around 20 bales in storage area, at the moment ive only got about 12 as ive not stocked up yet properly

I currently have 12 bags of the chopped straw, which should do about 3 full beds for Scottie,
Usually have a full round bale of straw too that i need to buy another,
Only have 2 bags of megazorb, but wont buy more until i know if it works with the chopped straw without being dusty or not,

And have 4 bales of shavings, but will be stocking up to have about 20 in at some point before the boys come in

I am now buying the feeds in bulk, i currently have 3 bags of readymash, 4 bags of high fibre in the utility room, and have just got a sack of the Winergy Ventilate supplement, which was £120, but if i buy the tubs of it individually, for the same amount as i just bought [10kg] id have actually spent £145.99, so a nice saving!
Also now buying the soya oil in groups of 4, which im saving £3.45 each can of it, because ive switched to a different brand

It also helps to stock up as Jase works shifts so isnt always garunteed to be around, so dont want to end up with no feed for several days. Plus being where we are, should help if we end up snowed in at some point in the winter!


Do you stock up? what do you get? are you finding its helped, or just a hassle?

What else are you doing to prepare for winter?

I tend to buy my hay in bulk - we usually buy 100 + bales for the winter and costs around £300.00 up-front but it's good hay and lasts!

I tend to stock up on feed as well as it ain't horsey round here so the nearest feed store is around 16 miles away, or the tack shop is in Llandudno Junction which is around 35 miles away!!!!!!!

I tend to buy rugs etc on line and get it delivered. We really do live (well the ponies) in the middle of nowhere up a mountain!!

I buy my stuff in bulk in the winter time. I have ten bales of hay on order and one bale lasts me about 3/4 weeks so those will last me right through winter. I havent bought my shavings in bulk yet as we are changing over to rubber matting at the end of this month and I havent quite decided which bedding I am going to have. If I do buy shavings then I buy about 20 at a time if I can get a good deal on them. At the moment I can get some Aquamax for £5.00 and am swithering whether to change over to his or not, cant quite decide.

We buy a few bags of feed at a time for each of the ponies as it is very difficult to get a hold of the feed that they have as my local feed merchants do not stock it I have to pre-order so usually end up having to drive 40 miles to the nearest supplier and get a few at a time.

Supplements I just buy when they are halfway down the tub Im using. If I see a good deal then I will buy when I dont need it though.

We have a huge storage container that we have just filled with hay and straw about 100 bales altogether thats between me and my sister, i dont bulk order feed as no where to keep it but have just ordered benevit hopefully enough to last 6 mths

With hay I used to buy 2-3 weeks worth, as we didn't have the space for any more than that. I think 10 bales lasted just over 2 weeks(Couple of sections given each day). Straw I used to buy 4-6 bales and that lasted me 3-4 weeks.

We cut our own hay, so we don't have o worry about that. With regard to feed and bedding. Our local wholesaler delivers us a palate of megazorb (60 bags) at a time and then at the same time delivers us whatever feed we have asked for, so usually have about a month or two's worth of feed delivered at a time.

Id love to be able to store about 100 bales of hay, but my storage area isnt that big, and theres no where else to put things so have to make do with the smaller amounts, although buying the feed and supplements in bulk really helps

We do grow and make hay here, however its sold to the farmer, however i dont use his hay

Its slightly easier hay wise as Scottie doesnt eat it, although it just means having to buy more fibre nuts, which is more expensive

I don't because although it works out cheaper I haven't got the lump some to pay for bulk, also I don't have anywere to keep anything.

I buy hay, the round ones, we get through 2 a week, 6 horses out 24/7, the hay is put out in the field for them to munch at.
