Question White powdery stuff in haylage

The haylage I have has this funny white powdery stuff, especially on the edges of each bale. (I buy the small bales). It doesn't smell like mould, the bales are all well sealed with no holes and are only open for 2 days before they are finished. Does anyone know what this white powdery stuff is, and is it harmful?

i got told off the farmer it was a yeast like stuff. He reconed it was harmless to eat but if the haylage was left to dry out the "powder" went more dusty and you wouldnt want the horse breathing it in. My hotrse has never objected to eating it.

White powdery stuff almost like cream is ok I think, it's when the haylage is black that it's gone off and needs to be thrown away. If in doubt smell it, if it smells sweet it's alright, if it's a vinegary smell (very nasty smell) throw it away.

It smells yummy and sweet, and the horses don't mind it. And it is a kind of creamy powder texture. I think it makes Kita high. She is lovely when she is on haylage

I think its some sort of mold, where the bale has gotten hot, I have seen it a few times during the summer when I had haylage.

It is fine, just a yeast. You get it on Horsehege as well - they have a note on the bag explaining that it is perfectly edable xx

As long as it doesn't smell bad, I would use it. Just keep an eye out for anything unusual.
