Dressage: Correct turnout, what a rider should wear when competing in Dressage

Dressage Dress Rules

dressage riderThe following describes the correct turnout and what to wear when competing in Dressage competitions.

Riding Hat

A hunting cap, bowler hat, riding hat/skull cap or dressage topper should be worn. Any skull cap cover should be black, brown or navy blue.

Shirt, Stock, Tie

A white shirt with either a stock or tie should be worn.

Riding Jacket

At Preliminary level to Advanced Medium level a uniform or conservative coloured jacket or tweed jacket should be worn. At Advanced level a uniform, tail coat or black/navy coat should be worn.

Gloves

Gloves must be worn.

Breeches/Jodhpurs

Breeches or jodhpurs must be white, cream or beige. If part of an official uniform they may of the uniform colour.

Boots

Black or brown boots should be worn. These may be long boots or jodhpur boots with gaiters providing the gaiters are identical leather to boots with no decoration.

Body Protector

Body protectors are not required but may be worn.

Whips

Whips are not required but are permitted except in Area Festivals, Championship classes, when riding an FEI pony, Junior or Young Rider tests or at the request of selectors. A whip is permitted in all 4 year old classes including championship classes and by ladies riding side saddle.

Spurs

Spurs may be worn up to Advanced Medium level and must be worn from Advanced level upwards.
