Enthusiastic and with vision, the pair worked and worked and then worked more! Janie took control of the equines and Debbie the administration and finance. Within a short period, stables were built, horses and owners, sometimes thankful for their pony's salvation, were booked in, rehabilitation programmes worked out, medical records initiated and fund raising started. In between all this, it rained - there was schooling and exercising to do, mucking out, hundreds of bales of straw and hay to carry but the pair worked on. By December they had a couple of loyal volunteers, a hoard of children from the neighbourhood and a wonderful fundraiser, Rosemary. The tack and feed room moved three times before finally settling in the old milking bell! Last but not least, there were almost fifty equine residents! With only twenty acres of grazing it was becoming essential to have some sort of area committed to exercising and mud control! An arena was planned and a security and floodlight system installed, (free of charge), a governing document was drafted and the formation of a charitable organisation began. That was then and this is now - Ten years later on and unfortunately the wonderful Sanctuary is no more. Once charitable status was achieved, Debbie and Janie parted ways. Janie in the direction of her own riding school and Debbie in the way of administering the registered Charity; unfortunately away from the sanctity of the Sanctuary. Fortunately a good structure was in place so the Charity was able to continue caring for the equines in their charge and re-assess the mode of operation without a yard! The majority of horses and ponies now live with caring and supportive families and in turn we support those homes by being available for our advice about an equine related problem or financial. No animal is unnecessarily put down and all are given individual care and attention to lifestyle. The aims of the Charity are:
The Charity currently cares for two full time equine residents and many others are supported in private individual's homes. The majority of help we give is financial ie to help with veterinary bills or winter feed bills. Very often our help is needed to provide rugs, even worming products so although we are without our Sanctuary we are still first and foremost a practical organisation, working where there is need and opportunity. A brief resume of some of the ponies we have helped over the years: Rainbow Buttons Amos David Tempest It is an ambition of Ride and Rescue to again have a Sanctuary where our work of helping neglected, abused, sick and unwanted horses and ponies which might otherwise be abandoned can continue and expand. You never know, a reader may have won the National Lottery and feel Ride and Rescue is a good cause! In the meantime, by making a donation, however small, you will help to sustain our Charity and give your personal support to a caring organisation. Every penny and pound received by Ride and Rescue is used to maintain the horses and ponies; veterinary care is not cheap nor is a good farrier. We hard-feed whenever necessary and hay is plentiful at all times. All equipment and tack is meticulously maintained to ensure safety to both equine and personnel. No wages or personal allowances are paid to any member of Ride and Rescue - all our commitment, time and knowledge are free of charge! |
